Protecting Water Mains & Facilities

Cathodic protection is essential to protect steel water mains to prevent the risk of external corrosion.By working in collaboration with Water Authorities throughout the UK, Corrintec has developed systems providing comprehensive and reliable protection.

As water mains usually cover large distances, ICCP systems are preferred because of their cost effectiveness. These consist of multiple groundbeds using silicon iron or mixed metal oxide (MMO) anodes and transformer installations situated along the length of the water main.

Careful consideration is given to all the relevant factors including:-

  • River crossings and other areas of low resistivity where corrosion rates can be more rapid.
  • Provision of test facilities at regular intervals, depending on access features such as rivers, main roads, railway lines.
  • Interference from other pipelines or structures in the immediate vicinity.

Clarifiers & Sedimentation Tanks

These are constructed in complex subdivided sections, resulting in large areas of exposed steel requiring specially designed hybrid cathodic protection systems. Corrintec’s approach is to use suspended silicon iron or mixed metal oxide anodes to protect the main body of the clarifier, whilst magnesium ribbon protects the channels against corrosion and also helps to reduce bacterial growth. In addition, an shaft earthing arrangement is connected to the paddle to bring it within the scope of the system.

Sedimentation tanks are also subdivided, but are of a more simple construction and therefore ICCP anodes can be fitted more easily.
